The Weird Pressure to Have the “Perfect Summer”

Every year around this time, it starts.

The summer bucket lists. The vacation photos. The “make every moment magical” posts. The pressure to pack every day with memories, activities, trips, camps, adventures, and nonstop fun.

And while summer can absolutely be exciting… it can also become exhausting really fast. Especially for parents. Especially for kids who thrive on routine. Especially for people already juggling work, finances, stress, relationships, mental health, or burnout.

At Kodiak Counseling, we want to gently remind families of something important: a good summer does not have to be a perfect summer.

Kids usually remember connection more than perfection. They remember movie nights. Popsicles on the porch. Late bedtimes. Running through sprinklers. Inside jokes. Drive-thru fries. Fishing trips. Board games during thunderstorms. The feeling of home being safe.

Not every day needs to be packed. Not every parent needs to become a cruise director for three straight months. And not every moment of boredom is a problem that needs to be solved immediately.

In fact, boredom can actually be healthy! It gives kids space to create, imagine, explore, rest, and learn how to exist without constant stimulation. And honestly? Adults probably need a little more of that too.

This summer, maybe the goal isn’t doing more. Maybe the goal is feeling more present while doing less. More walks. More fresh air. More conversations. More laughter. More slow evenings. Less pressure.

And if summer transitions bring stress, anxiety, family tension, emotional overwhelm, or behavioral struggles into your home, Kodiak Counseling is here to support you through that too.

You don’t have to create a “perfect” summer to create a meaningful one!
