There are moments in life that don’t come with a warning. Moments where everything feels too heavy, too fast, or too overwhelming to carry alone. And in those moments, most people don’t need perfect words. They don’t need a lecture. They don’t need someone to “fix” everything. They need someone to notice, stay, and help them take the next step.

First—Let’s Define “Crisis”

A mental health crisis doesn’t always look dramatic or obvious.

Sometimes it looks like:

  • Withdrawing from people or daily life

  • Expressing hopelessness or feeling like a burden

  • Sudden changes in mood or behavior

  • Talking about wanting to disappear, give up, or not be here

  • Feeling overwhelmed to the point of shutdown

And sometimes… it’s quiet. That’s why awareness matters.

If You Are in Crisis

First, take a breath. You don’t have to figure everything out right now. Just focus on the next step.

  • Reach out to someone you trust

  • Remove yourself from anything that feels unsafe

  • Go somewhere you don’t have to be alone

  • Remind yourself: this feeling is real, but it is not permanent

If you need immediate support, you can call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. You will reach a real person. You will be heard. You are not alone in this moment—even if it feels like you are.

If Someone You Love Is in Crisis

It’s easy to feel like you need the “right thing” to say. You don’t. What matters most is showing up.

Try this:

  • Stay calm and present

  • Listen more than you speak

  • Validate, don’t fix

    • “I’m really glad you told me.”

    • “That sounds really heavy.”

  • Ask directly if they are safe

    • This does not put ideas in their head—it opens the door for honesty

  • Help them connect to support

    • Sit with them while they call or text 988

    • Offer to go with them to get help

You don’t have to carry this alone either.

You Don’t Have to Be an Expert to Make a Difference

One of the biggest myths around mental health is that you need training to help. You don’t.

You just need to:

  • Notice

  • Care

  • Stay

That’s where real impact happens.

Where The U Project Comes In

In rural communities like the Uintah Basin, it can be hard to know where to turn—or how to access care quickly. That’s why The U Project exists.

We help connect individuals in crisis with:

  • Immediate support

  • Therapy services through Kodiak Counseling

  • Resources that might otherwise feel out of reach

Because no one should be left navigating their hardest moments alone.

One Life at a Time

We believe something simple, but powerful: You are loved. You are worthy. And your life matters—right now, exactly as it is.

If you take nothing else from this, take this:

👉 You don’t have to have all the answers to take the next step.

👉 And you don’t have to take that step alone.

If you or someone you love needs support, reach out. We’re here.
