Your Fourth of July Doesn't Have to Go Boom

Utah's summer has been... crispy. With wildfire danger at an all-time high, many communities have banned private fireworks this year. While that might throw a wrench into your annual neighborhood light show, it doesn't mean the celebration has to fizzle.

In fact, this year gives us the perfect excuse to get a little more creative.

As we celebrate 250 years of American independence, maybe this is the year we remember that the Fourth of July has always been about something bigger than fireworks. It's about family. Friends. Community. Gratitude. Freedom. Making memories with the people we love.

So if you're wondering how to make the holiday feel just as exciting without lighting up your driveway, we've got a few ideas.

Host the Backyard BBQ Everyone Wants an Invitation To

Keep the burgers simple and let the company be the star of the show. Bonus points if everyone brings their favorite side dish or family recipe.

Turn Dinner into a Competition

Hold a red, white, and blue dessert contest. Award prizes for the most patriotic, the most creative, and the dessert everyone secretly wants the recipe for.

Start a Water War

Who needs fireworks when you've got water balloons, sprinklers, water guns, and kids who have zero mercy? Trust us. They'll sleep great afterward.

Bring Back Backyard Games

Cornhole. Ladder golf. Volleyball. Bocce ball. Spikeball. Giant Jenga. An aggressively competitive game of Uno. A little friendly trash talk is basically an American tradition.

Make Your Own Outdoor Movie Night

Hang a sheet, grab a projector, pile everyone onto blankets, and watch a favorite patriotic movie or family classic under the stars.

Light Up the Night... Without Lighting the Hills

Glow sticks, LED balloons, light-up games, flashlights, and lanterns can make your backyard feel just as magical after dark—without adding to Utah's wildfire risk.

Support Your Community Celebration

Many cities are still hosting professional fireworks or drone shows in controlled environments. Skip the stress of buying your own and enjoy the show knowing trained professionals are handling the excitement.

Slow Down Long Enough to Make a Memory

Here's the truth: years from now, your kids probably won't remember whether you bought the biggest fireworks at the stand.

They'll remember sticky watermelon fingers. Dad accidentally burning the hamburgers. Running through sprinklers until the sun went down. Grandma insisting on "just one more picture." Laughing so hard someone snorted lemonade. Those are the moments that stick.

At Kodiak Counseling, we spend a lot of time talking about connection because it's one of the greatest protective factors for our mental health. The activities matter far less than the people we're sharing them with.

So this Fourth of July, celebrate big! Laugh loudly. Eat too much watermelon. Play one more game. Watch the community fireworks. Stay safe.

And make the kind of memories that last a whole lot longer than a fifteen-second explosion in the sky.

Happy Independence Day from all of us at Kodiak Counseling.
